Air Force Base Mpacha was established near Katima Mulilo in the eastern Caprivi as one of a number of operational air force bases in Sector 70 of the then South West Africa Command. It became a permanent base for a flight of Impala Mk II fighters and Alouette and Puma helicopters. These were redeployed to AFB Ondangwa and AFB Rundu for operational requirements as needed.
