In 1988 Okatope was assigned to 54 Bn. Okatope was a temporary base for South African Defence Force (SADF) units, including the 62 Mechanised Battalion Group, during the South African Border War in what was then South West Africa (modern-day Namibia) from the late 1980s until the 1989 withdrawal of South African forces.
