  • There is a lot to be said for the SAAF Alouette III gunship pilots, skill and a real sense of on edge flying would be an understatement. Here a SAAF Alouette flies up close and personal to a moving SADF “Buffel” APC (Armoured Personnel Carrier) somewhere during the Border War.

  • This photograph was taken from a South African Air Force Alouette gunship helicopter called in for close fire support to a SADF Army ground patrol who had hit a contact and where taking intense small arms fire from civilian dwellings in a village.

  • This is a SWAPO PLAN fighter’s “Rambo” pose with his buddies, it was recovered as intelligence from the original owner who was unfortunately killed in action.

  • As if things were not dangerous enough on the South West Africa (Nambia) border……Here’s a snake in the “longdrop” (ablution tent)! We are loving the “clothing optional, I just need my assault rifle” approach to deal with this.

This photo was taken in 1968 at Kasikili on the South West Africa (Namibia)/Botswana border, courtesy Derek de Beer.
