Australian served in the South African Army

Staff Sergeant “Blue” Kelly was an Australian ex-Vietnam War veteran who served as a legendary, tough-as-nails instructor and operations sergeant with the South African Defence Force’s (SADF) elite 32 Battalion (South Africa). He was known for establishing temporary bush bases in a tactical formation called “Kelly’s Triangle”.Kelly was instrumental in helping unit leadership shape early recruits into a formidable counterinsurgency unit.

He later transitioned to covert operations in D40, a predecessor to the Civil Cooperation Bureau (CCB).
