During the Portuguese Colonial War (1961-1974), Aeródromo Base N.º 7 (AB7) was a primary sector airbase located in the Matundo/Chingodzi region of Tete, Mozambique (3rd Aerial Region) and a critical operational hub. It directly supported anti-guerrilla actions, border surveillance, and defensive air cover, notably around the massive Cahora Bassa dam construction site. - Role: Close air support, interdiction, and independent strike operations.
- Historical Note: The Escorpiões were the first Portuguese jet fighter pilots to face and successfully survive deployment against Soviet-supplied SA-7 “Strela” shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles introduced by FRELIMO forces.
